Teens are staging their own births as promposals

Simply just asking is so 2000-and-late.

The hot new teen trend is apparently asking your potential prom date out in an elaborate manner. Cool.

YouTube whippersnappers are trying to stage viral video promposals in hopes that they’ll not only get noticed and have an awesome prom but reach Internet fame. This has culminated in the ultimate prom display: reenacting your own birth.

Shoutsout to the nerds out there who know that the acronym PROM is synonymous with a pregnant woman’s water breaking. This style of promposal is actually quite slick, if you think about it.

It’s also really hard to pull off and not all that medically sound. Imagine your OB/GYN tossing you onto a table in the middle of a dubiously sterile cafeteria as a crowd gathers to watch. Actually, go back a few hundred years and that’s pretty much the literal theatre of medicine.

Oh, and let’s not forget the weird implications of being pregnant at prom. Have these teens never watched Family Guy?

There’s an awful lot to unpack in these promposals. The New York Times‘ Amanda Hess does the heavy legwork by tracking down promposal enthusiast Ana Hernández, whose Tumblr of the same name showcases the crème de la crème of these elaborate acts. Both muse that American media may be to blame.

With that focus shifting from the likes of a Friends reunion to Damn Daniel, at least promposals will get more efficient. After all, a vine’s only six seconds long. Gotta make it count, kids.
