The Winter Olympics are evolving, and you don’t need the increased use of technology or the bigger presence of sports fandom to tell you that. Look no further than the athletes themselves.

In the first of a series on the Winter Olympics, AsapSCIENCE examines just how the physique of the Olympians we root for has changed.

While the human body hasn’t changed all that much in the last 100 years, the Olympic body on average has gone from an all-around average build to more specialized body types, depending on which sport you played. It’s not necessarily just a matter of bulking up or slimming down, and height can play a factor.

And while that could lead to problems for some in the future, it’s more realistic for athletes of all different shapes and sizes to achieve their dreams.
