Prom season is finally, mercifully, nearing its end, which means we won’t have to endure too many more ill-advised prom-posals. But one Pennsylvania teen’s story will melt your heart that has been turned to stone.
Ben Moser was fourth grade classmates with Mary Lapkowicz, who has Down syndrome. From a very young age, Moser looked out for Lapkowicz, making sure she was included in activities and that she was having a good time. At the end of the year, he even told his mom that when they were older, he’d ask Lapkowicz to prom, according to Pennlive.com.
Lapkowicz’s family ended up moving, and the two lost touch. But years later, the Susquehana High School football quarterback made good on his earlier vow by asking if he could accompany her to her school’s prom.
“We got balloons and I wrote ‘prom’ on it,” Moser told Pennlive.com. “I presented her with the balloons and asked her to go to prom with me.”
Lapkowicz admitted that she was “surprised” and that she had planned on going with friends. But we’re guessing she was much happier to go with her adorable childhood friend.
And her father, Tom, a teacher at Central Dauphin schools, where Mary goes to school, said that she had always dreamed of a fun prom night.
“She talked about going to prom,” he said. “I’d taken her to homecoming and stuff, but she had prom on her mind all along.”
A teen in Kentucky also asked his female friend with Down syndrome to be his date, proving that not all young people are garbage.
