There truly is a selfie for every occasion—including divorce

First comes love. Then comes marriage. Then divorce. Then the #DivorceSelfie.

Your marriage is over. You’ve signed on the dotted line, filed the paperwork, and made yourself free to mate with another. So what do you do first? Take a selfie, naturally.

One couple’s divorce selfie became the talk of the Internet late Tuesday when they shared a photo of themselves smiling together on Facebook with a message about their “extraordinary” decision to amicably divorce. Chris and Shannon Neuman made the post private after getting 30,000 shares, but provided a screengrab of their #divorceselfie post to the Huffington Post.

The Neumans, who were married for 11 years, provided the lengthy explanation to silence detractors who found the photo inappropriate or not in keeping with the stereotypical grim divorce.

“We weren’t celebrating with the pic, we were commemorating the accomplishment of a goal that we worked really hard to reach, together,” Shannon told the Huffington Post. “If we were celebrating, it was the completion of the process and coming out on the other side as friends.”

As it turns out, though, the Neumans are not the first to mark the end of their matrimony with a selfie. The #divorceselfie has been invoked by several other Instagram users, including some who also cite their children as the reason for the amicable split.

Others take a #divorceselfie as an oddly sentimental way to honor the relationship they had.

We have to admit, most of these people look pretty happy. So whether or not you think divorce selfies are a good idea, let’s all agree that anything is better than a funeral selfie.
