It's not what you expect.

Life in America has gotten especially chaotic and confusing in the months since President Donald Trump’s surprise upset in the 2016 election—and even more so since he took office. For proof, look no further than our collective Google search history, which holds up a mirror of sorts to popular society. The reflection often isn’t pretty.

Estately, a real estate site, has made a name for itself with these Google maps. Last year’s edition showed that Google searches were dominated by celebrities we lost, memes, and TV show reboots. It was a simpler time.

Fast-forward to the searches post-Election Day and you’ll find a country as dumbfounded as it is divided.

Washington wants a “West Coast secession,” Oregon wants to punch Nazis, and the citizens in at least two states are especially curious about how to move Canada. On the other side of the political spectrum, Tennessee wants to pray for Trump (while he prays for The Apprentice ratings) and New Mexico is looking forward to the border patrol jobs that might accompany his wall.

The saddest search term award goes to Alabama for “Who is Frederick Douglass,” proving perhaps that the iconic African-American author and abolitionist still isn’t getting the recognition he deserves, despite Trump’s claims to the opposite.

It’s not particularly scientific, but it does make you weep for the future. And the present.
