President Trump on Monday signed a bill repealing regulations that would protect workers from wage theft.
During Obama’s presidency, the administration signed the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Rule that barred companies from receiving federal contracts if they were in violation of labor laws. With the denial of employee benefits, minimum wage violations, or failure to pay, for example, companies would be punished.
But according to White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, the previous rule made it difficult for American businesses to grow.
“The rule simply made it too easy for trial lawyers to go after American companies and American workers who contract with the federal government,” Spicer said. “The president saw that workers, tax and businesses truly suffered under this rule.”
With a Congressional Review Act, Trump repealed the legislation along with a series of bills at a White House ceremony. The Trump administration, along with Republicans in Congress, have already used the Congressional Review Act to repeal more than a dozen legislative pieces signed by Obama.
“Only one time in our history did a president sign a bill to cancel federal regulations,” Trump told federal lawmakers at the White House. As the Washington Times notes, he’s thus far done this seven times.
