Texas GoFundMe campaign raises thousands to place billboard of Trump’s anti-Cruz tweet

A crowdfunding campaign has raised nearly $10,000 to place a billboard prominently featuring President Trump’s anti-Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) tweet.

The GoFundMe page, labeled Texas against Ted Cruz, is hosted by USA Latinx, a Pasadena, Texas political group dedicated to promoting Latinx candidates. It quickly exceeded its original fundraising goal of $6,000, raising nearly $10,000 in less than 24 hours.

“A rally is being planned, according to Trump ‘at the biggest stadium in Texas,'” the campaign description reads. “We are planning to display the presidents own words about Cruz from 2016 on a mobile billboard, to remind Texans of the truth.”

Much of the campaign’s success is due in large part to a partnership with David Hogg, the Parkland shooting survivor and well-known gun control advocate. Hogg, along with Claude Taylor, the chairman of the liberal Mad Dog PAC, promoted the crowdfunding effort on Twitter. Hogg tweeted Saturday that the billboard will be funded thanks to a massive influx of donations.

Hogg also tweeted the numerous anti-Cruz sentiments Trump has tweeted over the years, but the campaign will reportedly feature a 2016 tweet calling Cruz an “all talk, no action” politician.

Sen. Cruz, after his presidential primary race against Trump in 2016, is now running for U.S. Senate reelection against Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke. Recent polls have shown O’Rourke a mere 1 percentage point behind Cruz in anticipation of election day on Nov. 6. President Trump announced that he would be hosting a rally for Cruz next month.

The campaign is no longer accepting donations and announced via GoFundMe that the project has reached its goal.
