When Super PACs attack, people apparently listen (and click).
The Stephen Colbert Super PAC, Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow, is paying almost $8,000 this week to air an attack ad against Mitt Romney, but even without the ad buy the commercial is getting plenty of play on social media.
The commercial, dubbed “Mitt The Ripper,” calls Romney a serial killer, citing his time at Bain Capital (when his company purchased other corporations and sold off unprofitable portions) and when he compared corporations and people last summer in Iowa. The spot is narrated by actor John Lithgow and according to ABC News, is being aired 11 times this week in Charleston, South Carolina.
But the ad was going further than that on YouTube, being reposted a handful of times, with each instance getting thousands of views. The satirical ads are being well received on YouTube, Twitter and elsewhere. Dozens of tweets were being sent on Monday linking the video.
“I absolutely LOVE Colbert and Stewart!” wrote YouTube user CarlDRocco. “They’re (SIC) satire is brilliant. The saying, “it’s funny ’cause it’s true” is the key to their success. These guys have way more integrity than our main stream media and I think it’s crazy that a comedy channel now provides the best source of unbiased political news in our country. Thanks Stephen and John…you guys Rock!”
