Vice President Mike Pence turned red on Monday during a church service where a pastor denounced President Donald Trump‘s crude remarks on immigration, according to the New York Daily News.
The Faustian bargain the devoutly Christian Pence made to serve as Trump’s vice president has reared its head numerous times thanks to the president’s crassness, and he’s always found a way to deflect his way out of it.
But on MLK Day, as the storm continued to swell around Trump’s “shithole” comments, Pence had no choice but to sit and listen to a sermon that addressed the president’s choice of words.
Pence took in a Martin Luther King Day service at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Largo, Maryland, where Rev. Maurice Watson issued a harsh condemnation of the president: “I stand today as your pastor to vehemently denounce and reject any such characterizations of the nations of Africa and of our brothers and sisters in Haiti. And I further say: Whoever made such a statement, whoever used such a visceral, disrespectful, dehumanizing adjective to characterize the nations of Africa, whoever said it, is wrong. And they ought to be held accountable.”
The New York Daily News spoke with several parishioners, who said that Pence’s face turned red while he listened to the words.
It appears all of Pence’s Martin Luther King Day tributes backfired. After he tweeted a photo from the MLK memorial yesterday, people on Twitter reminded Pence how he made a show of being offended by Black people’s peaceable protests against police brutality.
