Ivanka Trump will be moving into the White House after saying she would play no formal role in her father’s administration.
Ivanka’s lawyer, Jamie Gorelick, reported to Politico on Monday that her role will include serving as President Trump’s “eyes and ears” while providing advice to her father. Though she is not an official government employee, Ivanka will be following the same ethics and rules that apply to government employees, according to Gorelick.
The first daughter is in the process of obtaining a security clearance and will be receiving official communication devices. She’ll have her own West Wing office.
Ivanka’s participation has concerned many with potential conflicts of interest between her businesses and her father’s administration. She has been politically active even before Trump was sworn into office and has accompanied her father to meetings. Just last week, Ivanka was seated next to Angela Merkel for the German Chancellor’s first official visit to the White House under a Trump administration.
Gorelick said having a president’s child actively engaged is “new ground” but says the same rules will be applied to her. “Our view is that the conservative approach is for Ivanka to voluntarily comply with the rules that would apply if she were a government employee, even though she is not,” he said.
