Flora Young, who goes by @youwishiwasyourgranny on TikTok, has used the app since January to create videos about her own experience leaving an abusive partner.
In a Feb. 15 TikTok, Young wrote that in 1979 she left her “abusive ex-husband and started living.” She wrote that she eventually found a great man who loved her and her children.
In one of her videos, Young sits and drinks a glass of wine under a caption that says “When my friends said if I divorced my abusive ex, my reputation would be ruined in our small town…” with Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation” playing in the background.
When the caption disappears, Young lip syncs the rest of the song, saying “I don’t give a damn about my reputation.”
She wrote on TikTok that these videos are based on her actual experiences, captioning one video with “This is a #TrueStory.”
“I was mentally abused by my husband, and that’s what most of my TikToks are about,” Young told KATC.
Young, who did not immediately respond to the Daily Dot’s request for comment, has over 76,000 TikTok followers and her videos have nearly 1.7 million likes in total.
Young’s TikTok followers comment on her videos and thank her for spreading awareness.
“It’s very comforting to me that there’s women like you in the world who made my order of protection against my ex possible,” @itsmagstersauce wrote. “Thank you for your bravery.”
Olivia Savoie, Young’s daughter, said her grandmother loves to tell her story “and empower other women to get out of abusive relationships,” per KATC.
Savoie did not immediately respond to the Daily Dot’s request for comment.
In her latest video, Young wrote that she had an important message for her viewers.
In the video, she wrote that “It is never too late to leave an unhealthy relationship” and that “You have the rest of your life to be happy and free.”
