To the surprise of many, the critically loathed Suicide Squad took home an Oscar of the evening Sunday night, winning best makeup and hairstyling. The award went to Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini, and Christopher Nelson—all of whom were nominated for the first time.
An Italian immigrant, Bertolazzi gave a nod to his roots in his acceptance speech and made the first political speech of the evening.
“This is for all the immigrants,” he said, hoisting his awards.

Despite Bertolazzi’s speech, viewers on Twitter mainly focused on the shock that Suicide Squad—which has been widely criticized—actually won an Academy Award.
