When single mom Whitney Kittrell heard it was “Dads and Donuts” day at her son’s school, she says her “heart sank.” She had always promised to do whatever it took for her kids not to feel different for only having one parent. So she put on a tee shirt and ball cap, painted on a goatee, and played “dad.”

In a Facebook post that has since gone viral, the Utah mom details the event, saying she first asked her son if he wanted his grandpa to go, but he told her, “No. I want you to go. You’re my mom and dad.” Because no parent could say no to that, she went to the school and smiled as her son introduced her. “This is my mom… she’s my dad too, so I brought her!” he said.

If her son’s sweetness wasn’t already warming all of our hearts, when Kittrell went to leave, he ran after her, hugged her, and whispered, “Mom… I know that you’ll always be there and do anything for me.”

Kittrell says there are times she wonders if she’s succeeding as a single parent, but her son seems to be proof that she need not worry.

However, I do wonder if she knows she isn’t the first person to have this idea—or go viral for it.
