Andy Rooney knew his end was near.

In his 1,097th and final essay on Oct. 2, the 60 Minutes host said, “All this time I’ve been paid to say what is on my mind on television. You don’t get any luckier in life than that.”

The Journalist and television personality died Friday at the age of 92. Known for his wry and at times humorous commentary on CBS’s weekly magazine show, Rooney had been retired for less than a month. (An occasion that sparked an ill-informed roast on Twitter.)

CBS spent the weekend remembering the writer whose career started as a reporter for the Stars and Stripes during World War II. The remembrances, of course, spilled onto Twitter, with people posting memories, thoughts, and favorite quotes. According to Topsy.com, Ronney was mentioned more than 84,000 times on Saturday alone.
