A server in Utah revealed on Facebook that he received a $5 cash tip with the words “Get out of America, F*g” written on it.

Ashton Bindrup is a server at a restaurant in Ogden. According to his Facebook post, he was serving an older couple and their middle-aged son, who were all wearing “Trump 2020” hats. After the meal, they paid with a credit card but left a cash tip. Bindrup told Fox13 that “they actually tipped me really well,” as their bill was $22.

In his Facebook post, Bindrup recalled that the family asked him for a pen. “Guess I shouldn’t have walked away after giving it to them,” he wrote. He later went to go pick up the check and found the $5 bill with the slur hand-written on it. He included two photos of the bill in his post. “Today I experienced targeted hate. Hate that I often see in the Trump constituency. And it’s a reality that needs to be faced,” he wrote.

Bindrup told Fox13 that he believes the family went out of their way to leave the tip with the slur on it. “They’d asked me for a pen during the meal,” he said. “They paid with card, but it was all an electric system so there was no receipt… that’s why I thought it was odd when they asked for the pen.”

Fox13 reports that while Bindrup cannot press hate crime charges against them, the family can face jail time for defacing money.

However, Bindrup is not taking legal action against the family, but he is instead trying to share a larger message of love. “For EVERYONE, liberal and conservative alike, the message is not to be angry or to be sad. The message is to do better as humans. ALL OF US,” he wrote in an update on his original post.

After posting about it online, the story gained both local and national attention. But while both Fox News and Fox13, a local Fox affiliate, covered the story he believed that neither “reported the story 100% accurately.”
