The Mexican Department of Defense issued a warning about a phony flier asking people to anonymously offer information on criminals.

Under the headline “Your complaint is the weapon,” the flier gave an email address and telephone number, according to the statement. The fliers were found in Monterrey and were designed to look as if they had been issued by the Secretary of National Defense.

The Daily Dot has not been able to obtain an original copy of the flier. If you find one, please submit it to tips@dailydot.com, and we will investigate further.

While it is unclear who printed the fliers, they were found in a month in which three people were killed, presumably by the Los Zetas drug cartel and reportedly for posts they had made on social networks and blogs. The killings, all in the border town of Nuevo Laredo, has raised fears about the cartel’s ability to identify people who were online anonymously.

“Mexican Narcos force hackers to ID anonymous posters on social media–then kill bloggers. Truly sad,” Ciara Byrne tweeted.

The hyperviolent drug cartels have been able to buy off, kill, or otherwise intimidate local police forces in Mexico’s decadelong drug war. That has left the Department of Defense in charge of enforcing drug laws. Some 45,000 Mexican troops — a quarter of the standing Army — are engaged in a domestic war with the drug cartels.
