Turkish couple Cengizhan Çelik and Candan Canik may be the first in the world to exchange their wedding vows through Twitter.
Mustafa Kara, mayor of Istanbul district Üsküdar, officiated the ceremony and sent a tweet via his iPad asking the Celiks if they took each other as husband and wife, according to Al Arabiya. The pair responded to the question by tweeting the word “evet” (or “yes”).
The witnesses also carried out their duties through Twitter, but all parties were together in person at a restaurant. Çelik, social media editor of a news site, said the couple “wanted to have a little surprise.”
While Çelik’s job presumably dictates him to be active on Twitter, it seems his new wife isn’t that enthused about being a Twitter user. Her “evettttttt” tweet is the only one that appears on her account. A charming video of the ceremony (uploaded to the site Çelik works for), however, proves the ordeal wasn’t as much of a Klout-boosting gimmick as it sounds.
It’s far from the first wedding-related incident we’ve seen on Twitter. Chad Ochocinco tweeted his way through his ceremony two months ago, after inviting a bereaved follower to the ceremony. Likewise, the Daily Dot’s Grant Robertson proposed through Twitter.
In 2009, a groom surprised his lucky bride at the altar by updating his Facebook status to say he tied the knot and sending a Just Married tweet before kissing his new wife.
These days, there are just so many ways to say “I do.”
