Author, activist and critic Christopher Hitchens died on Thursday after a long struggle with esophageal cancer.  His battle with cancer was lengthy and public, and, like Steve Jobs, his fans, charmed by his logical and witty “zingers,” had been expecting his demise.

When news of his death broke, Twitter users took to sharing the news at a high enough rate to make “Christopher Hitchens” the top trending topic on Twitter in the United States.
