Early Monday morning, electronics vendor ASUS tweeted a picture of a woman seen from behind as she showcased one of the company’s new computers at a conference in Taiwan. The picture included a caption that read: “The rear looks pretty nice. So does the new Transformer AIO.”
The tweet has since been deleted, but coming on the heels of the New York Times’ “Men Invented the Internet” article, many followers viewed this as another example of an insidious trend.
Over the past few months, awareness has increased over the issue of gender discrimination in the tech world. This heightened visibility is partly due to recent studies showing Silicon Valley to be behind other industries when it comes to including women in high-paying executive and engineering positions. But nothing raises awareness like a gaffe from a high-profile company, and ASUS is the latest culprit.
