Comic book fans who love their unique, quirky superheroes are going to be thrilled with Marvel’s latest announcement. On Monday the company revealed that Squirrel Girl will finally get her own ongoing series titled Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.

The new series will be written by Ryan North with art by Erica Henderson. It will follow Squirrel Girl’s alter ego Doreen Green as she starts college, according to Entertainment Weekly, which got a first look at covers for the comic. Of course Green will soon find herself having to defend the world as Squirrel Girl. Squirrel Girl may seem like an unlikely hero, but she’s taken on some of the toughest villains in the Marvel universe and won, so think twice before you say no to squirrel-like mutations.

“Her ability to take down powerful bad guys is one of the things I love about Squirrel Girl, actually!” North told Newsarama in an interview. “It’s fun to write too: in the past, a lot of her victories have taken place off-panel: you see the bad guy down but you don’t know for sure how she did it. I can’t do that in this book—too easy!—so a lot of the fun is figuring out ways that having all the powers of a squirrel really would make you this unstoppable force for good.”

This announcement combined with Marvel trademarking Squirrel Girl this summer might mean the company has bigger plans for the hero. After seeing the success of Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s no surprise Marvel might turn to more of its quirkier characters for inspiration. It might be fun to see the Great Lakes Avengers on the big screen or better yet, finally a solo female-led movie featuring Squirrel Girl.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl will debut Jan. 2015.
