It’s no secret that women make less money than men do for the same jobs. It’s also no secret that they routinely get passed over for high-ranking job opportunities. Even the glamorous and beautiful women of show biz feel this disparity, so they decided to fight against it by forming The Make It Fair Project.
Rita Wilson, Mamie Gummer and other well-known actors and directors from stage and screen teamed up to create a video for the project, satirizing the struggles of men in the entertainment industry.
“In the past few years, only 93 percent of popular films were directed by men and only 80 percent were written by them,” the women say in the video.
“Sadly, only 70 percent of speaking roles were given to men.”
There’s even a “We Are the World”-type anthem at the end, which is sure to become a misandrist anthem for this generation.
Despite the facetious tone of the video, #MakeItFair is actually a serious campaign for gender equality in the film industry. On Facebook, the women describe the cause as “a call for gender equality in the stories we tell, the wages we earn, and the future we shape. The goal is vast and so, as artists, the women behind #makeitfair decided to do what they do best: create.”
The page also states: “As #makeitfair moves forward, the women involved will continue to raise awareness, ask tough questions, celebrate female talent, connect female artists to opportunities, laugh, create, and broaden the scope of the stories being told.”
If Rita Wilson can’t make men listen, then who can?
