The video game that made it cool to slingshot birds through walls of wood, ice, and rock is now smashing records.

Angry Birds, the runaway hit from Finnish game developer Rovio Entertainment, has been downloaded more than 500 million times on smartphones, making it the most downloaded game in history, reported Daily Tech, an online tech magazine.

The game, which allows users to slingshot multicolored birds at evil green pigs with the intent of evaporating them, has been a worldwide phenomenon since its release less than two years ago. It has inspired a line of toys, cartoons, and TV commercial guest spots.

Not to mention thousands of fan-made baked goods, art, decorations, costumes, food, and YouTube videos based off the game.

Last year, fans met up in person in 778 cities around the world.

In an official Rovio video released Wednesday, the company highlighted some of the milestones the game has reached:

  • #1 seller status in 79 different countries
  • 266 billion levels played
  • 400 billion birds shot
  • 44 billion stars collected
  • 200,000 years of Angry Birds playtime
  • 300 million minutes played daily

“Proud to be one of half a billion people playing Angry Birds!” commented jspector86 on the video.

Of course, that leaves 6.5 billion to go.
