Sometimes I think, “What’s the point of understanding blood alcohol levels if the only time they’ll ever be relevant to my life is if I get pulled over for drunk driving?” (FYI, I don’t drink and drive, so within this frame of thought, my BAC is pretty irrelevant to my life.)

Figuring out how drunk you are in the moment is often a guessing game, especially when you lose track of how many drinks you’ve had. Are you just comically drunk or one drink away from alcohol poisoning? According to those I know who have gotten alcohol poisoning, apparently sometimes it’s hard to tell.

The AlcoMate REVO breathalyzer makes measuring your level of intoxication as precise and scientific as possible, and you don’t need a police officer around to use it. The kit includes the AlcoMate REVO Breathalyzer, two AAA Batteries, five mouth pieces, and a carrying case.

I used it myself at a friend’s birthday party, and it worked like a charm. In my attempt to review it, though, I came across kind of a big issue. The .183 BAC version of me put it this way: I would not use it if I was drunk, because I’d be too drunk to be curious.

And at $217.95, it’s a little pricey to be just a forgotten gadget.

Of course after some sober reflection, I’ve concluded that its best use is as a safety measure. While the practice of having a breathalyzer at every party hasn’t permeated our culture just yet, it’s not a bad trend to start for social drinkers. Most importantly, it can help confirm whether you should give your friend a bottle of water and tuck them into bed or get them medical attention.

If you’ve got the dough and want to drink more responsibly, one of these bad boys might be perfect to bring along the next time you hit the town.
