Getting ready for summer? Need back-to-school supplies? Searching for some birthday presents? Have some big projects you need new tools to complete? No matter what you’re looking for, chances are you’ll find a great deal on Prime Day, the annual sales bonanza from Amazon. Deals typically don’t last long, so you’ll need to prepare some in advance. Here’s everything you need to know about Prime Day.

What is Prime Day?

Prime Day is Amazon‘s annual sale. It’s essentially a summertime version of the holiday’s Cyber Monday and Black Friday deal days. It usually takes place in July and offers Prime customers deals and savings across all categories of products and services.

When is Amazon Prime Day 2020?

Amazon Prime Day 2020 is a little late this year, but promises to be the biggest shopping event yet. It begins at midnight Pacific Time on Tuesday, October 13 and will run for five days, through October 20, offering members more than one million deals around the world.

The history of Amazon Prime Day

Amazon Prime Day started in 2015, as a way to celebrate Amazon’s 20th birthday.

Prime members purchased more than 14 million items on that first Prime Day.

What kind of deals will be available?

There will be a set amount of “Deals of the Day” offering discounted products and services, as well as “Lightning Deals,” which will be available for set periods of time. Last year, Amazon live-blogged throughout Prime Day, which served as a useful tool to discover deals throughout the day.

Amazon Prime Day facts and figures

On Amazon Prime Day in 2018, Prime members bought:

  • More than 500,000 toys
  • More than 65,000 sets of headphones
  • More than 190,000 pet products
  • More than 287,000 items of clothing
  • More than 400,000 beauty products
  • More than 248,000 lawn and garden products
  • More than 59,000 sports tech items

2018’s Amazon Prime Day was actually longer than a day, clocking in at 36 hours and offering one million deals worldwide. Last year’s Prime Day even overshadowed Black Friday and Cyber Monday as well as Prime Day 2017 to become “the biggest shopping event in Amazon history.”
