Uber isn’t letting last week’s car accident in Arizona hold it back from technological advancement.
The ride-hailing company’s autonomous cars will resume testing on San Francisco roads as early as Monday. Uber’s two self-driving vehicles in California are further along in the testing stage than those in Arizona and Pittsburgh, leaving the company more confident in continuing testing. Fleets in the other two cities will remain grounded for now, according to TechCrunch.
Though each of the test vehicles is able to drive itself, humans are still in the driver seats to take over controls in case of emergency. Last week one of the Uber test vehicles in Tempe, Arizona was involved in a car wreck with a Volvo also in self-driving mode. After the incident, Uber temporarily grounded all of its autonomous vehicles in the U.S. Uber’s testing in San Francisco was also previously halted when a viral video caught one of the self-driving cars running a red light.
All of this is just a continuation of Uber’s last few months of upheaval. The company faced claims of workplace sexual harassment, which led to a campaign for users to delete the Uber app in protest. Soon after the CEO was recorded swearing at a driver, the company president stepped down.
