President Donald Trump made an unsubstantiated claim today that there was “a chance” the infamous anonymous op-ed published in the New York Times last month was made up by the newspaper.

The article, where a “senior official in the Trump administration” said they were part of a resistance in the White House, Trump said, could be a fictitious work composed by the Times.

The president made the claim, without offering any evidence, during an interview on Fox & Friends after the hosts asked him about the op-ed, which reportedly caused tensions to rise within the White House after its publication.

“There is a chance–I don’t say it’s a big chance–but there is a very good chance that was written by Times and if it wasn’t, it would be a low level– you know, thousands of people are qualified for that heading–and the Times said, we did scrutiny and we found out who this person was,” the president said. “That means it is not a major player because they know all the players, they know who they are. I wouldn’t be that surprised because the Times is totally corrupt and dishonest.”

Trump said he would “like to” find out who wrote it, adding:

“I would like to go in there and I’d like to find out who it is. It could have been the New York Times wrote it, to be honest, they are very dishonest paper. It could have been the New York Times, probably wasn’t, but it could have been the New York Times that wrote it.”

The New York Times did not immediately respond to a request for comment by the Daily Dot.

The president’s unsubstantiated assertion is the latest in a number of attacks he’s made against the media during his time as a politician.
