Instagram will snitch on you when you screengrab a Story

Instagram is making it a lot harder for creepers to secretly snatch images and videos from your public stories.

The social network is now testing a feature that sends an alert to users when someone takes a screenshot of their stories. Not everyone is included in the test. If you are, you will receive a rather stern pop-up warning you of the feature: “Next time you take a screenshot or screen recording, the person who posted the story will be able to see.”

Can you see if someone screenshots your Instagram Story?

If you want to see who screenshots your Instagram story, visit the Stories main page—where you can see a list of public posts—and look for the pinwheel-shaped camera shutter icon next to the name of an account. This appears to be the only way to determine who is capturing your public photos and videos. You won’t receive a notification or direct message—you’ll have to check it manually every time. Of course, the best way to prevent people from snatching your content is to stop posting anything you don’t want them to see.

It’s not clear how many users can access the feature, but Instagram acknowledged its existence in a vague comment to TechCrunch, “We are always testing ways to improve the experience on Instagram and make it easier to share any moment with the people who matter to you.”

Instagram already reveals when users capture content sent in a direct message. It was only a matter of time before they brought it to Stories, where images and videos are posted to a larger audience. That being said, Instagram hasn’t officially announced the feature and may end up scrapping it rather than making it available to all users.

As you might have predicted, this wasn’t Instagram’s idea. Snapchat has been warning users when others take a screengrab of photos or videos since it launched in 2011. But not everyone likes being snitched on. Some users say it’s the main reason they switched from Snapchat to Instagram and have threatened to leave Instagram if it goes forward with its screenshot notifications.

While Instagram is taking a stand against screenshots, it remains ridiculously easy to save Instagram videos and repost Instagram videos.
