Tumblr’s massive porn stash—by the numbers

By purchasing Tumblr, Yahoo bought a lot of porn.

Thousands upon thousands of blogs dedicated to porn.

Among Tumblr’s biggest 200,000 most popular domains, more than 10 percent—22,775, to be specific—contain adult material.

That’s according to a study by Web analytics firm SimilarGroup and obtained by TechCrunch. Perhaps even more striking is the fact that 22.37 percent of the traffic Tumblr gets from other sites is straight to one of its porn sites.

It’s still unclear what’s going to happen to the scores of Tumblr’s hip, cool, naked-body-filled blogs now that they’re under Yahoo control. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer effused in a Monday morning press conference that “the width and breadth of content on Tumblr is what’s exciting and has allowed it to reach more users.” She also promised to monetize Tumblr’s NSFW content “in a way that is tasteful,” but didn’t get into specifics.

Something that is specific, though, is Tumblr’s vast, tightly categorized world of porn. It caters to seemingly every taste—funny porn, furry porn, not-porn porn, specifically-specific porn, and, of course, porn for those who really love My Little Pony.
