Beth Cook is a dating coach and wing-woman who throws private dating events for San Francisco’s most awesome and unattached. She also writes and draws about her own dating experiences and would love to hear from you. Want advice? Have advice? Send her an email.

Take Sex in the City, turn it into an animated GIF, and swap out the Marina District in San Francisco for the West Village in Manhattan. Give it all an acerbic edge and you’ve got HOT IN SF: a visual blog about living and dating in the Marina.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with San Francisco neighborhoods, let me sum up the Marina District. It’s where you live if you used to belong to a fraternity or sorority, are preppy, conventionally good looking, love to party hard, hit the gym hard, and make a lot of cash.

Similar neighborhoods exists in most big cities. You know, those city blocks where the breasts are pushed up, the hair is sleek, the jeans are tight, the wallets thick, and everyone can drink their weight in booze.

Got the scene? Now take a look at some highlights from HOT IN SF. Blonds are stalked by creeps in suits at the Dateway (otherwise known as the Marina Safeway), pageant coaches exhort Marina girls to “Use Your Brain,” blond 20-somethings dance on table tops and swing from Champagne bottles at a restaurant/lounge on a Friday night. It’s the Marina, all right, captured in GIF form:

1) WHEN I GO SHOPPING AT DATEWAY (a nickname for the Marina Safeway grocery store)

2) WHEN SOME CHICK CALLS HERSELF A MARINA GIRL

3) WHEN YOU WALK INTO BIN 38 (a wine bar) AND ALL YOU SEE IS CUTE COUPLES

4) AFTER A 5 MINUTE CONVERSATION WITH A GIRL YOU MEET AT MONAGHANS (a local bar)

5) WHEN YOU WALK INTO MAS SAKE (restaurant / lounge) FOR DINNER ON A FRIDAY NIGHT

This blog doesn’t discriminate: It rips on guys and girls, accurately nailing the culture of a neighborhoood with GIFs that are both hilarious and rude. HOT IN SF’s anonymous creator is obviously an insider, choosing moments and characters that populate the area on a regular, if not daily basis—as those who live or hang out there know only too well.

I’d love to see even more done with animated GIFs on the subject of dating (hint, hint). In the meantime, I’m going to keep checking in on HOT IN SF—and if this is your type of guy or gal, now you know where to find ‘em!
