Ask anyone who watches TV, reads, or listens to podcasts—there’s no hotter genre at the moment than true crime. Cases make for excellent drama, and The Act is no exception, and the anthology series is coming exclusively to Hulu.

The Act is an adaptation of the real-life story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and the murder of her mother Dee Dee Blanchard, who was accused of abusing her daughter and fabricating her many disabilities and illnesses.

The eight hourlong episodes start with a depiction of Gypsy, a teen girl who seems to have a long list of medical issues. She’s confined to a wheelchair and relies on a feeding tube. Her mother claims she is paraplegic, epileptic, and ” has the mind of a 7-year-old,” among many other things. But as most true crime cases go, not all is what it seems.

Without spoiling all the grisly details, the story of the Blanchard family is one of the strangest and most compelling murder cases in American history. It’s been spun off into an HBO documentary (Mommy Dead and Dearest), a Lifetime dramatization (Love You to Death), and the subject of many investigative TV specials over the past few years.

Here’s everything you need to know to watch The Act online for free.

The Act cast

  • Patricia Arquette as Dee Dee Blanchard
  • Joey King as Gypsy Blanchard
  • Chloë Sevigny as Mel
  • AnnaSophia Robb as Lacey
  • Calum Worthy as Nick

When does The Act start?

The first two episodes of The Act premiere on Wednesday, March 20, exclusively on Hulu. Subsequent episodes will air weekly on Wednesdays after that.

If you’re looking to finally cut the cord, Hulu with Live TV may be your best option. Hulu with Live TV is one of the most popular ways to stream live TV, perhaps because you gain access to a massive library of on-demand content including classic and current TV shows, movies, not to menti0n Hulu’s original programming. That includes The Act of course. As far as live-streaming goes, you’ll have almost 60 channels to flip through, including HGTV, a full suite of ESPN channels, Cartoon Network, FX, and even deep cuts like Nat Geo Wild and Syfy. If you sign up for Spotify Premium, you’ll automatically receive a free Hulu subscription. There are a few catches: It won’t work with Spotify Premium for Families, you can’t upgrade to Hulu with No Commercials, and you also won’t be able to add premium channels like HBO. (You can find more details in our guide to Spotify with Hulu.) But if you’re looking to pair a music streaming service with your TV needs, this deal potentially offers the best of both worlds.
