The biggest weekend in Hollywood is finally here, and if last year’s film reel is any indicator, the 2019 Oscars will be one for the books.

Veteran directors like Spike Lee and Alfonso Cuarón are gunning for both best picture and best director, with their movies BlacKkKlansman and Roma, respectively. After 30 years of filmmaking, this is Lee’s first nomination for directing. In other firsts, a Marvel movie is nominated for best picture with Black Panther.

Among other things to expect, there are plenty of nominations out of left field this year. Lady Gaga may just join Cher in the “music phenoms who also have Oscars” club, thanks to her lead actress nomination for A Star is Born. Comedy great Melissa McCarthy dazzled audiences with her serious acting chops, earning a lead actress nom for her portrayal of Marielle Heller in Can You Ever Forgive Me? (Here’s how to stream all of the 2019 Oscar-nominated movies and the Oscar-nominated animated shorts.)
