You season 2 is happening.
The series, which originally debuted on Lifetime, picked up a whole new fanbase after being acquired by Netflix and released on Dec. 26. Netflix even tweeted out that in its first month of release, more than 40 million accounts had streamed the series (though many found that number questionable).
You season 1, which stars Penn Badgley as charming psychopath Joe Goldberg and Elizabeth Lail as Beck, the woman he stalks, drew in viewers with its dark take on social media, entitlement, and toxicity in New York City. Badgley stays on for season 2, but the location and leading lady are new.
Here’s what we know so far about You season 2.
You season 2 plot
Not much about the plot has been revealed yet, but series creator Sera Gamble told Entertainment Weekly that the show is relocating to Los Angeles in season 2. “Joe is not moving to L.A. because he f–king loves the West Coast,” she said. “He’s a New Yorker and he has bought the party line on how terrible L.A. is and when he gets here, very little dissuades him from his initial opinion.”
Gamble told The Hollywood Reporter that “There’s a lot more to explore about Joe from earlier in his life,” and that they’ll get into that in season 2. The new season will also reveal what happened between Joe and his ex Candace, who was assumed to be dead but surprised Joe in the season 1 finale.
“I would say if somebody were to do a scientific analysis, you would probably say that season 2 diverges from the book more than season 1,” Gamble told Bustle, referring to the books by Caroline Kepnes, on which You is based.
You season 2 cast
Victoria Pedretti, who plays Nell Crain on Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, has been cast as season 2’s lead Love Quinn. According to EW, Love is an “aspiring chef” and isn’t as obsessed with social media as season 1’s characters. She has also just experienced a personal loss when she meets Joe.
“This show is an opportunity to illuminate an L.A. that maybe a lot of people haven’t seen that goes beyond the Hollywood sign and Love is part of that,” Gamble told EW. “She’s a Los Angeles native. She has really absorbed the best of the city and she’s really artistic with the way that she lives her life.”
