John Legend defends Colin Kaepernick—but not for the reason you expect

'How much more political can I get without running for office?'

Just like his wife Chrissy Teigen, John Legend's not shy on Twitter.

The ten-time Grammy winner didn't mince words Tuesday morning with a series of tweets in support of NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick—the San Francisco 49er who's in hot water after choosing to remain seated during the national anthem. 

After a postgame interview last week in which Kaepernick stated he's "not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," sparked plenty of social media outrage, Legend spoke up to support the athlete's act of protest.

Beyond that, he had a suggestion for a song he felt might be a more fitting option:
And acknowledged that, even though he's not a politician, awareness-raising is something he can contribute to as a celebrity: 
Honestly, voting Legend/Teigen in 2020 doesn't sound too bad.

The NFL backed him up, saying it was Kaepernick's right to sit, but many fans hastily expressed their outrage on Twitter. Some burned their Kap jerseys. Other showed support.
