For years, Reddit has run the internet’s largest Secret Santa gift exchange, pairing up total strangers who send gifts based on a short note about their match’s interests. But sometimes, that little bit of information just isn’t enough.
This year, for example, one Secret Santa read that his match really enjoyed Reddit’s r/trees forum. If you’ve been on Reddit for any length of time, you know r/trees isn’t literally about trees. It’s about weed. (You’ll find trees, for real, at r/sfwtrees.)
But this Secret Santa either didn’t know that or wanted to make a great joke. He carefully noted his match’s preferences and sent along this thoughtful gift:
Well, that’s not a bong! That’s a living plant you’ve got to take care of. Very different sort of tree, that. “Maybe I should have just written ‘I like weed,’” many of us would be thinking at this point.
But not our very good-natured gift recipient, who was extremely chill about the whole thing. Here’s their response:
Regardless of whether or not this is a joke or if they really do have a strong passion for gardening, I love the randomness of my new bonsai tree and will try to keep it alive. Thanks for a memorable first experience Secret Santa!
