After ruling that Hugo the cat was not entitled to compensatory damages resulting from a July incident with a neighborhood dog that left his scratching post in tatters, Judge Dempsie, who has served on the bench for 21 dog years, is being accused of judicial misconduct.
"This was clearly a case of extreme bias," said Colette Kunzig, the lawyer for Hugo. "My client presented clear video evidence of the guilty party destroying his scratching post. But everyone knows Judge Dempsie never rules against dogs."
For his part, Dempsie is denying claims of misconduct.
"Judge Dempsie is a well respected member of the judiciary and has always passed fair and appropriate judgments," read a statement from his office.
The case may go in front of the judicial review board next month.
