Emails are the worst. Unless you know how to set your Gmail account into a well-oiled machine, you may end up sending an email you didn’t mean to send or spend hours sifting through a messy inbox that’s probably inundated with spam. Thanks to a new update, you can now save some of the precious time you use to write replies to messages.
Beginning this week, Inbox by Gmail will roll out a feature called “Smart Reply.” It’s a collection of three automated responses written by the email service itself that are based on the kind of emails that land in your inbox. The idea is rather than spend five minutes composing a generic reply to an email, users can choose the most appropriate reply template and send that instead. You can also choose a response and add more text to it.
Since Smart Reply is designed using machine learning, the feature actually gets better at predicting what kind of responses you favor the more you use it. It also is smart enough to generate fluid sentences, so you don’t have to worry about sending tone-deaf emails.
Smart Reply will be included in the upcoming Android and iOS updates for Inbox, that intimidating Gmail app you’ve been scared to upgrade your regular Gmail to. Now would be the perfect time to install it if you want to give this feature a try.
