You can send GIFs of famous quotes through Facebook

The company behind the app hopes it'll inspire you to pick up a book.

Talking to people online is both addicting and challenging. Whenever it’s the latter and your wizardry for words just isn’t cutting it, you can always fall back on clever emoji and cute stickers. Thanks to a new Android app, however, you can now take Facebook Messenger conversations to the next level with animated GIF quotes.

The aptly named GIF Quotes is a smidgen more sophisticated than your garden-variety reaction GIF. Rather than focus on moving imagery, the app’s GIFs highlight popular lines from songs, books, movies, and famous people. As long as you have both GIF Quotes and Facebook Messenger installed on your device, you can send GIFs to your friends through standard Facebook messages.

The app offers four ways of picking the right GIF. The first option is to search based on your feeling.

GIF Quotes

You can choose a GIF that fits the sentiment you’d like to convey. The 24 options include a section for “sympathies” that you might generally want to avoid, but it also has “OMG” and “WTF,” which are both very acceptable messages to send through Facebook chat.

If you’re too lazy to think of what to say, you can check out what’s trending in the app. You can also click on “Random” under the “How do you feel?” option—although it’s currently inundated with Harry Potter quotes, which may not be helpful unless you’re a fan.

Lastly, you can use the search tool. It’s a little bit clunky at first, but it does the job. You can search by quote or by source.

Once you choose a GIF, it will ask you to send it via the Facebook Messenger app, where you can choose a recipient and add a caption before sending. Even though GIF Quotes is currently only available on Android, the animations work across all Messenger apps and platforms.

Despite being a fun and appealing option for wreaking havoc on countless Facebook chat threads, GIF Quotes’ mission is actually a noble one: It wants you to read more.

The app’s creator, Glose, wants to build a social reading platform for ebooks.

“We spread inspiration from the written word in all shapes and form,” the app’s description reads. “GIFs are one of them. GIF Quotes lead to books, and reading books leads to everything in life.”
