If you were impressed with how large the New Nintendo 3D XL’s screen is, wait until you see the latest Game Boy hack.

Game Boy XXL is a picture perfect copy of Nintendo’s original platform that began the company’s domination of the handheld gaming space, albeit several magnitudes of size larger and without the sepia tint. The screen measures 19 inches; an adult’s hand laid flat might just about cover the d-pad, and it looks like the two face buttons could be punched as well as pressed.

Game Boy XXL emulates original Game Boy titles via software developed by the RetroPie Project. This means that Game Boy XXL could also be made to emulate games from other legacy platforms like the Atari 2600, Commodore 64, Nintendo Entertainment System, and Sega Master System among others.

Tetris may have been the most popular game released for the original Game Boy. It certainly had a lot to do with how many kids were carrying a Game Boy in their back pocket shortly after the system was released in 1989. So what better way to show off the Gameboy XXL than with a game of Tetris?

Raz, the creator of Game Boy XXL conceived of the project at a chiptune festival in Belgium called Nintendoom. The hardware was constructed at Erasmus High School in Brussels, where Raz is a student, and at Fablab Brussels

Since the completion of the first Game Boy XXL, Raz has been asked by one of his teachers to build a second unit. That ought to be worth enough extra credit to last until Raz graduates.
