Do you put your phone in a bulky case or let it roam free in all of its beautiful but fragile glory? Soon, that struggle could be behind us all, thanks to a major breakthrough from Corning, the company behind Gorilla Glass.
The company claims that it has made a new type of glass, currently dubbed Project Phire, which has the same shatter resistance of Gorilla Glass 4 (the tempered glass found on a lot of modern electronics), plus nearly the same scratch-proof factor of sapphire glass.
If it becomes a reality, it would make screen protectors—and bulky cases—pretty much obsolete.
Apple flirted with Sapphire glass for its iPhone 6, but the company ultimately backed away due to cost. Sapphire glass is scratch-proof and has immense clarity, but Apple decided to use Gorilla Glass 4.
Corning has always made it a point to keep its glass affordable. You can find Gorilla Glass on all types of phones, from super expensive Samsung Galaxys to cheap Windows Lumias. If Corning pulls off Project Phire, it would most definitely put Sapphire glass to rest.
