Holiday shopping is edging ever-closer, and you’re probably already inundated with gift ideas. If one of the things on those lists is a tablet, then you have some homework to do. Tablets are not one-size fits all, and if there pre-teens eyeing a device, then you should narrow down the options.

Not everyone needs the brand new iPad with its top-of-the-line specs (and the attached price tag). If you’re thinking about buying a tablet for a younger user, you should be shopping with a few things in mind—prime among them being some built-in guardrails to keep them from exploiting credit cards with in-app purchases. Luckily there are a handful of tablets that come with software to help this, and are also more affordable (especially with these Black Friday deals).

Think of it as keeping the training wheels on just a bit longer.
