Despite the best efforts of the @Jon2012Girls, there's no bringing Huntsman back.

Former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman dropped out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination on Sunday night after a less than stellar performance in the New Hampshire primary last week.

Twitter was quick to respond to the news. According to Zach Green of 140elect.com, Sunday night featured the largest number of mentions yet for the former governor and ambassador.

Huntsman was expected to make the announcement on Monday and to throw his support behind front runner Mitt Romney.

Most tweets on Sunday night were simply about the announcement, but some took the chance to poke fun at the moderate candidate.

“Jon Huntsman quit the race after a new poll showed him with 1% name recognition among members of his immediate family,” wrote comedian Andy Borowitz.

Indeed, Huntsman was often overshadowed across social media by his three daughters, the @Jon2012girls, who gained an impressive following on Twitter late last year.

“The@Jon2012girls are still going to be campaigning right?” wrote Green.
