You know Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad, and Peppy Hare as ace starfighter pilots and defenders of space, but you don’t know them as movie stars… yet.

Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins, an animated short featuring the stars of the upcoming Wii U game Star Fox Zero, will be shown Friday at 3pm PT on nintendo.com. It’s been five years since the release of a Star Fox game, and 11 years since the franchise appeared on a platform outside Nintendo’s DS handhelds, so a fresh introduction to these characters may be in order for a healthy number of gamers.

The Star Fox series features anthropomorphic animals as the heroes of the planet Corneria, and the villains of the planet Venom, who battle across the Lylat star system. Fox McCloud and his wingmates fly starfighters called Arwings. The leader of Corneria’s army is a dog. Andross, the villain of the series, is a primate who strongly resembles a monkey.

You can’t take the story in a Star Fox game too seriously, but you probably should respect the skill challenge. Star Fox games aren’t easy.
