How did a trailer this bad turn into a movie as good as ‘Star Wars’?

'A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away' almost never happened at all.

“A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away” almost never happened at all.

In this early promotional trailer for 1976’s original Star Wars film, the opening line is this clunky dud instead: “Somewhere in space, this may all be happening right now.”

It goes on to promise “a big, sprawling space saga of rebellion and romance” as well as “an epic of heroes and villains and aliens from a thousand worlds” but offers little in the way of plot, characterization, or, you know, cohesion.

Fans who’ve watched this saga play out on the big screen for the last four decades will no doubt appreciate the line about it being “a billion years in the making,” though. Rogue One hits theaters Dec. 16.
