The developers must have nerves of steel to create this horrifying universe.

A word of warning: Do not watch this trailer if you are rattled by the Necronomicon, torture, the visions of H.R. Giger, being trapped underground, or the complete annihilation of your human soul. It has all of those things.

Agony is an upcoming first-person shooter from MadMindStudio, a small team composed of folks who have worked on titles in the past like Witcher 3 and The Division. The official site describes the game as an ascent from the bowels of hell. You play a tortured soul with no memory of your past. The trailer is below, but be warned it contains explicit content and disturbing imagery.

Well, that makes Doom look like a kid’s birthday party. Agony is clearly aiming to be banned, but the approach is a refreshing one for horror games, tossing cheap ploys like jump scares out the window.

The game’s summary mentions that you can control people and demons on your journey to meet the only being that can show you the way out of Hell, the Red Goddess. This suggests that mind control may be a part of the gameplay, which sounds like a slight advantage for your character while you fumble your way out of this desolate pit.

Agony is slated for a 2017 release and will come to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Playing it in the dark is probably a bad idea.
