Here’s a pointer for maximum enjoyment of your college football experience: If you’re foolish enough to run on the field during the game, try to avoid the coach whose specialty is strength and conditioning.
During the first half of Ohio State’s 50-28 drubbing of its intrastate rival, the Cincinnati Bearcats, a spectator emerged from the stands and ran on to the field only to rocked by a bodyslam from Buckeyes coach Anthony Schlegel. The crowd of more than 100,000 roared its approval as the coach lifted the interloper off his feet and threw him to the turf. The dazed fan, wearing an Ohio State jersey, was crushed with such force, his sunglasses came flying off.
Schlegel is a former Ohio State linebacker who was drafted by the New York Jets in the third round in 2006. He returned to his alma mater in 2011 as strength and conditioning coach and operates a fitness business called Schlegel Hardcore Elite Training. It seems logical to predict there will be a waiting list for his upcoming classes.
Buckeye coaches and sideline melees seem to go hand in hand. College football fans will never forget the 1978 Gator Bowl when legendary Ohio State coach Woody Hayes punched a Clemson linebacker who intercepted a pass and was knocked out of bounds where Hayes was standing. That was Hayes’ last appearance on any gridiron.
