Here at the Daily Dot, we swap GIF images with each other every morning. Now we’re looping you in. In the Morning GIF, we feature a popular—or just plain cool—GIF we found on Reddit, Canvas, or elsewhere on the Internet.

Hail Artemis!

Moonrise is a phenomenon both well-understood and still mysterious, one of those things that science can never render fully mundane. Today's glorious GIF demonstrates that well: While it debunks the notion that the moon appears larger closer to the horizon, it is still an awe-inspiring thing to watch.

Out of 11 snaps, taken in sequence over 28 minutes, Dan Marker-Moore of the Tumblr elides a moonrise GIF to beat them all. Its occluded dawning transforms slowly into a celestial white beacon staring down on Los Angeles like a narrowly escaped angel, a sort of noir-redemption narrative perfectly suited to the city that spawned the genre.
