A baking soda and vinegar-fueled volcano still blows past the competition when it comes to childrens’ go-to science experiment, but for all the ways we’ve perfected it, it can still go very, very wrong.
One young girl who tried doing the experiment last December learned the hard way that you’ve got to be very careful when creating something so explosive. She gathered all of the ingredients, her toy volcano, and a kitchen towel to soak up some of the mixture once it spilled over. She took her time, and things initially seemed alright, but it slowly dawned on us that perhaps her face was a little too close to the volcano.
Does it blow up in her face? No, the result is even funnier—until it’s not.
The girl’s failed experiment largely went unnoticed for months until it ended up on Reddit’s r/videos, where people almost immediately tried debunking it. Even if it’s not a Jimmy Kimmel prank (as many initially thought), the redditors have compelling evidence to back up their cries of “hoax!”
It all comes down to the reflection in the microwave.
One redditor claims that “you can see someone at 1:09 walking away covering their mouth to muffle the laughter.” That will no doubt inspire heated debate until Reddit sets its sights on the next potential video hoax. But a few seconds later, you can see the girl’s reflection, showing her covering her face. This suggests that she might not be on the floor where she and the bottle of vinegar fell. Instead, she might be closer to the camera.
Is the video fake? Probably, but that won’t stop people from watching and laughing anyway.
