The banana-eating was getting "too sexual" for the Ministry of Culture.

China’s crackdown on pornography has made it difficult to upload porn to major video hosting sites in the country, but the rise of livestreaming offered a new hope. Live video is much harder for the government to monitor, so the available content can be racier than what you’d find on video hosting sites.

How racy? Well, videos of women seductively eating bananas just got banned, so…

China’s state-controlled news service, CCTV, reports that the Ministry of Culture is looking into five major live video sites—Douyu, Panda.tv, YY, Zhanqi TV, and Huya—for hosting “vulgar” or “too sexual” content. And that content, apparently, includes women wearing revealing “spaghetti strap” tops *gasp* and people performing simulated oral sex on bananas.

According to the BBC, Chinese netizens have started making fun of the new rules, wondering what counts as “erotic” banana eating and suggesting that camgirls will just switch to cucumbers or yams instead.

Hardcore porn videos are banned in China, and the country’s communist history means there’s not much domestic porn production—homegrown porn stars are somewhat rare and not extremely popular. Chinese women eating bananas on livestreams have to compete with Japan’s thriving “AV” industry, which has practically “colonized” the Chinese market up to this point.

The Chinese domestic sex toy industry, on the other hand, is booming.
