Teachers are sexy, pilots are sexier, women want to date male models almost as much as men want to date female models, and interior designers have got it going on. These are just a few of the surprising revelations in Tinder’s newly released list of most popular professions on the dating app, the Independent reports.
“The list was compiled based on the occupations of user profiles that received the highest ratio of right swipes from November 2015 through January 2016,” Rosette Pambakian, vice president of communications and branding for Tinder, told the Daily Dot via email. “We’ve found that adding work and school information to a Tinder profile increases a users’ chances of being swiped right. This extra layer of information provides deeper insight into our users.”
Tinder only began allowing users to state their profession on their profile three months ago, and has now harvested the data on how many times profiles featuring certain jobs get a right swipe. Pambakian said millions of users have since added their occupation to their profiles.
The list of the 15 most popular jobs for each gender does feature some stereotypes about what kind of occupations are attractive—firefighters and police officers score highly on the list—but there are also some much less obvious conclusions. “Teacher” is a popular job with both genders, coming in at No. 5 for most right-swiped women’s jobs, and No. 6 for men’s. Both genders also like a job that guarantees their mate will be in good shape, with “personal trainer” featuring at No. 12 in the list of men’s occupations and No. 14 for women’s.
Some of the results seem to support Miranda from Sex and the City’s theory that men prefer their female partners to have lower-status, less well-paid jobs: “nurse,” “flight attendant,” and “dental hygienist” make the top 15 women’s jobs, whereas “pilot” and “doctor” are rated highly for men. However, both genders seem to be attracted to the pioneering spirit, with founder/entrepreneur coming in at No. 2 for men and No. 3 for women. And contradicting the notion that it’s only men who dream of dating models, there’s not much disparity between genders when it comes to choosing a partner whose job it is to look good—model is No. 8 for men and No. 10 women.
Perhaps reflecting that Tinder is by far most popular with the 16-24 demographic (the Global Web Index states that 39 percent of users are in this age bracket), the occupation of “college student” also rates highly. Check out the full rankings:
