The 700 Club host Pat Robertson proved that his advanced age hadn’t dulled his trademark awfulness when he comforted a woman who had lost her baby by saying that it was probably for the best, because Hitler.
Despite the fact that Robertson wants a vomit button on Facebook for whenever he encounters a gay person and thinks it’s A-OK to divorce your spouse if he or she is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, people still call in to ask his advice on all manner of issues. When faced with a situation on Tuesday that begged for sensitivity and thoughtfulness, Robertson had, as per usual, a heinous response.

“As far as God is concerned, he knows the answer from the beginning. He sees a little baby, and that little baby could grow up to be Adolf Hitler, he could grow up to be Joseph Stalin, he could grow up to be some serial killer. Or he could grow up to die of a hideous disease. God sees all that. For that life to be terminated while he’s a baby, he’s going to be with God forever in heaven. That isn’t a bad thing.”
Well, it’s not so great for the parents of that child who died.
And what if that baby grew up to be a doctor who saved hundreds of people’s lives? What if he grew up to be an opera singer who inspired fans while making them cry in ecstasy? What if he grew up to be the civil servant that picks up your recycling every week? All of which, by the way, are more likely options than a baby growing up to be a murderous dictator.
It’s not as if Robertson told the grieving mother that her lost child was probably going to be Hitler. Even so, the mind boggles at this man’s heartlessness.
